What matters most
Separate active playing time from standby: a DJ waiting quietly through a dinner is still on the clock, so agree how that is charged.
Points to work through
- Anchor the schedule to real start and finish times, not "about 8 till late", so overtime is measured against a fixed point.
- Agree the overtime rate and the smallest billable block up front — per hour, per 30 minutes — in writing.
- Name who can authorise an extension on the night, so a spontaneous "keep going" does not become a disputed invoice.
- Plan breaks and set changes so the floor is covered without paying for gaps you did not need.
- Confirm when the venue requires music to stop, because that ceiling caps any overtime regardless of budget.
